The camera’s aperture is an important feature that can determine the size and the brightness of an image. This is why you need to know how to make good use of it. Here are some facts about your camera’s aperture and tips on how to use it in order to take beautiful photographs.
What is Aperture?
Aperture in photography refers to the size of the lens’ opening. Logically speaking, the wider the lens, the more light will come in and the pictures will become brighter-looking.
Just like the ISO, aperture also affects the photos’ exposure and determines whether or not an image is too bright or too dark. Additionally, the aperture also influences the depth of field in a photograph, or simply put, the focus of the image.
Aperture is represented by the f-stops digit that you can find on the screen of the camera. For instance, some f-stops may be written like f/6 or f/10. When you use lower digits when taking photos, it means that you are also using a wider aperture.
Additionally, wider aperture is also called bright or fast, which means that when you use lower aperture, you tend to take brighter photos. Since more light comes in, one click of the shutter button and you can instantly capture an image.
Why Adjust Aperture?
There are a lot of reasons why aperture should be adjusted manually regardless if you’re using a DSLR or a point-and-shoot device. However, a lot of people think that since aperture is adjusted automatically when taking photographs, there’s no need for them to learn other valuable techniques.
1. Provide Uniqueness to the Image
Adjusting the aperture can provide uniqueness to your images. When you adjust the aperture you want to use at a particular time, you automatically exercise creative control over the photograph. At times when you are shooting under the sun and you feel the need to use higher aperture, all you have to do is adjust it with a single click.
2. Guarantees Two Types of Images
When you know how to manually adjust the aperture of your camera, you can easily take two types of images.
First, when you use lower aperture like f/1.5 for instance, you will be able to capture the main subject of the photo in sharp focus. Everything else that you can find in the shot will appear to be blurred.
Second, when you use higher aperture like f/10 for instance, you will be able to take a clearer image not only of your subject, but also of the entire background.
At first, manually adjusting and using your camera’s aperture might seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually pretty simple. All you have to do is to try changing the aperture and take test photos to see what difference higher and lower apertures may provide.
After you’ve done this, it’s now time to print out the pictures that you like best. At Sam’s, you can print out one, two, three or bulk photos at a competitive price.
