If you are a mountain climber or any kind of adventurer, you should be in to photography because your choice of leisure is too exciting to be just documented in your memory bank. Your adventurous spirit gives you access to “never-been-seen” nature scenes that’s worth showing the world. In case this convinces you to bring your camera along on your next adventure, here are few items that you should now about Adventure Photography.
Create the Adventure
80% of successful Adventure Photography is about your choice of adventure. If one is going to the Grand Canyon, then it will take a lot of photography skills to impress anybody. But, if we are talking about Nanga Parbat, Kangchenjunga, The Eiger or Matterhorn which all belongs to the most dangerous mountains to climb then, one single photo from your cellphone is enough to make it to the front page. But let’s just choose Mount Washington in New Hampshire for now while you are still getting used to climbing with an extra load; a camera.
What Kind Camera Should you Bring
You are an adventurer and your bag should be packed with first aid kits, water, clothing for warmth, sports bars for food and other survival gadgets. There is only one small space for a camera and that’s inside our breast pocket so any Pocket Sized Point-and-Shoot Camera will do. Heavy Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras are great for nature photography but will be useless if it’s inside your back pack most of the time.
Landscape Photography from the Adventurer’s Perspective
Since you are a mountain climber, you have to take advantage of your perspective. Shooting a mountain far away that includes a part of the sky and the whole mountain range will not work for you because every tourist that passes by the highway can take that photo better than you could. It would be better if you could shoot the mountain from where you are seeing it. Since you will start climbing at the break of dawn, you can shoot the mountain from its foot. The sun will be hidden behind the mountain and you can get a good shoot without causing any flaring on your lens. When you are already on top of the mountain, take a photo from that view. If that happens to be the tallest mountain in the area, use that vantage point and shoot down to emphasize your height.
Adventure Photography with a Personal Subject
So far, you have only taken landscape photos on an adventurer’s perspective. To shoot authentic Adventure Photos, you have to focus on a foreign subject. The foreign subject could be your tent, your backpack or any climbing tools. It would be perfect if you can focus on something that is directly identifiable to you. Your name spelled out in big bold letters on your tent or backpack will be the best subjects.
Taking your camera along for some landscape and adventure photos will make your adventure more exciting. These memories can last a lifetime, have them printed at your local Walmart Photo. And when it’s time to put your gear in the closet permanently, you’ll have hundreds of adventure photos to enjoy and share to everyone you love.
